 2004 Educator of the Year

Scott Chaffin

Scott began teaching at Wood River Middle School in 1996. His current teaching assignments include the following:  Literature, Writing and Leadership (Student Government).   He has served on the Building Leadership Team for the last six years as a seventh grade teacher representative. Scott has also been an advisor and liaison to the Blaine County Youth Partnership and Asset Ambassadors as well as a co-leader of the community travel club for up-coming freshman.  In addition, he has participated on several committees: the Education Foundation, School Safety and Language Arts Committee.

In the classroom, Scott is a dedicated instructor who is passionate about his subject matter and his students.  He is known at the high school level for his ability to graduate students who have superior writing skills.  Teachers at the high school have often commented that they can always tell who has had Mr. Chaffin by their advanced writing skills. In all of his classes his students are motivated and excited about learning and as a result he is able to challenge and push them to succeed.  Mr. Chaffin is teacher that is sought after for his caring and fun-loving attitude.  He has proven to be an organized, energetic and committed teacher who is dedicated to quality education.  A truly exceptional person and teacher, he creates a positive, comfortable and safe environment for his students. Scott was recently selected for the newly established “Idaho Education Talent Pool”. According to State Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Howard, “This is a select group of educators who have consistently demonstrated exemplary instructional practices; have a record of outstanding accomplishments, with the potential to make long-term contributions to the teaching profession; and who motivate, challenge, and inspire students, colleagues, and the community.”

Scott has very good rapport with students, parents, and other staff members alike. He works with several faculty members on campus as a Blue Team member.  In addition, he is currently the advisor for Student Government. As a result of his leadership and dedication, Student Government has improved the atmosphere and school spirit at Wood River Middle School, through pep assemblies, contests, news broadcasts, and other activities.  Student Government also gives students an opportunity to interact with a variety of community organizations and programs. Two examples of these programs include the Soup Kitchen and the Blaine County Senior Walk-A-Thon.  Finally, Scott showcased this wonderful program as a presenter at the Middle School Conference.

Another good example of Scott's dedication is his involvement in our middle school athletic program.  In the past, he has been involved with the Football program at Wood River Middle School. Besides working as a coach, Scott has also supported the girls athletic program by operating the official scoreboard for several years.  His endeavors as a coach and an official scorekeeper have impacted students outside the classroom.

It is a pleasure working with Scott. He has a strong work ethic, that is demonstrated by the amount of time and energy he puts into this profession.  He truly sets the standard for all middle school teachers. When it comes to teaching, Scott is a natural.  His dedication and enthusiasm is truly inspiring.
