2005 IMLA Region 5  Educator of the Year

Leonora Burton

“The entire faculty wholeheartedly nominated Leonora Burton, Marsh Valley Middle School’s special education teacher.  Leonora is truly a devoted, outstanding teacher.  While many regular education teachers are frustrated and discouraged with low achievers, Leonora seems to have a knack for knowing how to motivate and inspire them to new heights.  Her patience and respect in regard to their individual disabilities are evident in the way she accepts and supports all students regardless of their appearance, behavior, or achievement.  Leonora does the entire academic testing for her program and sees enormous gains.  Most of her students make 10-33 points growth on the ISAT.  She makes herself available at lunch and has created a study hall which benefits not only her students, but regular education kids who need extra help.

Not only does Leonora work well with the students, she is invaluable to the staff and community.  She meets daily with her aides and weekly with both the 7th and 8th grade core teachers to plan strategies and help modify curriculums for the success of her students.  The past two years Leonora has been a volunteer presenter at the 5th District Aides Conference, where more than 15 districts attend, sharing her knowledge and expertise.  She also teaches adult literacy night classes twice a week through the college.

Her dedication to learning and her drive to help those in need, reaches beyond our doors, and we would like to recognize her efforts.”
